BOB KINGSLEY: Emily and Martie were child prodigies who learned to play several stringed instruments at an early
age. Even then, they delighted in showing off their talent as fiddling Chick Martie Seidel recalls.
MARTIE: I'd go to any fiddle contest that was around my house that was going on and a lot of them were
young competitions. You know, I was in the 15 and under or whatever. I wasn't a big contest fiddler like a lot of fiddlers
are. I just never really got into that 'cause I was always in a band. But there was one national championship in Winfield,
Kansas that I was really nervous and I didn't think I was gonna place so well but I placed second and I was really proud of
that. So I think it taught me early on to be a perfectionist at what you're doing and a little competition's good. Good for
the soul.
